Legally Blonde: The Musical, Lyceum, until Novemvber 21
IT’S a genuine case of blonde ambition as Barnsley actress and singer Abi Weigold prepares for her debut at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre.
The 24-year-old business administrator from Darfield is playing the lead role in the STOS Theatre Company production of this Broadway and West End hit.
But 20 years ago as a talented four-year-old she was making her debut at Barnsley’s Lamproom Theatre.
“My first show was Mr Scrooge, based on A Christmas Carol and me and my brother Matthew were the only kids who turned up for the audition so we got in,” says Abi, who works at the Stancill Brewery in Sheffield.
“I did lots of shows at the Lamproom after that – in fact, I think you could say I grew up there.”
Inspired by the love of theatre that grew on the Lamproom stage, Abi went on to study Musical Theatre.
“I did try to go professional after I graduated but it is just so hard.
“Now I’m getting the chance to play some dream parts.”
This is her biggest challenge to date, playing the starring role in Legally Blonde: The Musical.
“I saw how many people were going to audition for it and I thought I didn’t stand a chance,” Abi says. “But this was a part I really wanted so I gave it everything I had.
“I love Legally Blonde. It’s got everything you want from comedy to romance – and a Chihuahua!
“It’s the hardest show I have ever done because I’m on stage 95 per cent on the time and the other five per cent I’m getting into my next costume with a really quick change.
“It’s a challenge, which I’m really going to enjoy.
“I never thought I’d get to play dream roles in amazing venues like the Lyceum!”
