Inspector calls to cause chaos in classic satirical comedy

The Government Inspector, Crucible Theatre

This famous comedy is about a corrupt small town thrown into disarray by the arrival of an official who may uncover its dirty secrets. Theatre group Ramps on the Moon has a mixed disabled and non-disabled cast. Actress Kiruna Stamell talks about the show.

What attracted you to the part of the Mayor’s wife Anna?

Anna is an amazing character. She’s very sexual and, as a disabled actress, being able to play a really sexy character is so often denied me.

She’s got to the top and there isn’t anywhere else to go in this town so she dreams of going to St Petersburg and the glamorous life there. I could easily imagine her starring in ‘The Real Housewives of…’

What are the positives of the integrated casting in this production?

I think representation is so important because if you have more disabled people on TV, in film and on stage, like we are in life, it’s less of a shock when someone with dwarfism walks into your local butcher.

Baz Luhrmann created the role of La Petite Princesse for you in the film Moulin Rouge! How did that come about?

A: I was an extra on Babe – Pig in the City but we didn’t film anything because it got rained out. Then a year later I was cast as an extra on Moulin Rouge! and it was the same casting director and she said she remembered me and we had a chat. That day she sat next to Baz Luhrmann at lunch and described me to him and told him I had a dance background and within 24 hours I had a dance audition. It was amazing, I was working with Jim Broadbent and Ewan McGregor.
