THORNENSIANS delivered two strong displays in four days but were left empty handed after derby defeats to promotion chasing Goole and Wath-upon-Dearne.
A large crowd witnessed Thorne lose out 25-5 to neighbours Goole at Coulman Road in Yorkshire Three on Saturday, with Wath earning passage into the semi finals of the Yorkshire Silver Cup with a 45-15 win there on Tuesday evening.
Skipper James Fenwick led Thorne superbly against Goole and his side opened the scoring with a try from winger Danny Gilbert.
Goole went ahead with a converted try and penalty but Thorne continued to push with open side flanker Arron Holt destroying opposition pressure.
Thorne were prevented from cashing in on territorial advantage due to strong defence from the visitors.
Goole ran in two further tries in the first half but Thorne remained in touch and took the ball against the head in scrums through Rob Russell and Anthony Bull.
The second half featured exciting open play with centre Zac Holgate making several penetrating runs and Danny Gilbert looking threatening.
However, Goole grabbed the bonus point with their fourth try to maintain their promotion push.
Another big game followed quickly for Thorne as they entertained Yorkshire Three champions Wath who have a 100 per cent record this term.
Though managing three well taken tries and a superb back line performance, Thorne slipped to defeat in the contest.
Thorne’s Development XV host Sandall on Saturday in a 3pm kick off while the First XV are away to Sheffield Oaks in the South Yorkshire Trophy on Tuesday at 6.30pm.
