Doncaster Knights report back for pre-season training at Castle Park today just over a month since their bid for Premiership rugby ended in glorious failure.

The vast majority of the side which lost out to Bristol in play-off final despite winning the second leg at Ashton Gate, remain at the club.

They will meet up with the Knights’ new recruits, most of whom reported for training last week along with players such as Simon Humberstone and Sam Edgerley who missed the play-offs run-in due to injury, for the first time as team-mates.

Despite the fact that the 2015-16 season didn’t finish until late May, fitness coach Dougie Flockhart still gave the players a schedule to follow.

“It was just something to keep the players ticking over and they’ll all report back rested and their bodies recharged,” said director of rugby Clive Griffiths yesterday.

“It will be good to see everybody again as we start the build up to the 2016-17 season,” said the Welshman, expected to unveil his new backs and skills coach this week.

“We’ll have a chat and welcome the new lads and just go over some of the things we’ve established in recent years and which I don’t see changing too much because why change something which is working well?

“We’ll also get stuck into some training because our first friendly at Newcastle is only five weeks away and we’ll definitely be getting the balls out.

“The temperature this week looks like being a lot cooler than this time last year but in any case it’s that’s never a problem because we always factor the weather into our training programme.”
