Leaders Doncaster Phoenix maintained pole position in North One East with a hard fought 11-6 victory at home to Wheatley Hills.
However, the win was never a foregone conclusion as Wheatley failed to be daunted by their rivals’ recent form.
Only a spirited defence by Phoenix kept the visitors out as Hills spent the last five minutes camped in the home 22.
Wheatley had taken the lead with a tenth minute penalty goal from Owen Gillvray, playing on the wing.
Phoenix equalised when fly-half Jamie Lennard slotted over a penalty.
As the first half went into stoppage time Phoenix produced the only try of the match when prop Tom Bagnall crashed over.
Lennard missed the conversion kick against the wind, but it gave Phoenix an 8-3 lead as the teams changed ends.
Wheatley pulled back a penalty by Gillvray 15 minutes into the second half, and a further 20 minutes elapsed before Phoenix restored the margin with Lennard’s second.
Still they could not relax as Wheatley threw everything at them, but in the end the visitors had to settle for a losing bonus point.
Phoenix are level on points with second placed Morley but have a game in hand on all of their rivals.
