Racing: Thursday preview

Monein can extend his unbeaten record to three as he tackles the Bet totetrifecta Handicap at Chelmsford.

Charlie Appleby’s three-year-old made a perfect start to his career at Lingfield in January, winning what appeared to be a decent event although it has only produced one subsequent winner.

While the opposition may not have been all that hot, there could be no arguing with his half-length success as not only did he fluff the start, but he also ran green in front.

That effort certainly caught the eye of punters as he was sent off an odds-on favourite on his handicap bow and duly justified those odds with another half-length verdict, this time seeing off a front-running stablemate.

He showed an excellent attitude that day and a further 6lb rise may not be enough to arrest his progress, with the stable in terrific form on the all-weather.

Goldmadchen was a little unfortunate to bump into an unexposed rival last time out but compensation awaits in the Coral Casino Handicap.

She struck gold at Wolverhampton last month and has hardly been disgraced in two subsequent outings, finishing fourth and then second on her most recent appearance.

The seven-year-old looked a likely winner when taking the lead with half a mile to run that day, only for the mercurial Serenity Now to hit top gear in the dying strides and deny James Given’s charge of a win.

She was eight lengths clear of the third on that occasion so is obviously still competitive off the mark of 57, which is what she will be racing off here.

Kodiac Lady was another who just lost out of late and better is expected in the Handicap at Wolverhampton.

The three-year-old has yet to score in six outings but appears to be progressing with every run and her recent neck defeat represents her best effort to date.

Gabrial The Thug can bring up a course-and-distance four-timer in the Ladbrokes Handicap.
