Calypso Choir made a deep impression when making a successful debut at Bath back in June and can graduate to Listed class with honours in Newbury’s Bathwick Tyres St Hugh’s Stakes.

The Sylvester Kirk-trained juvenile was seemingly not that well fancied for her introduction in Somerset, but could not have been more impressive, showing plenty of exuberance before shooting six lengths clear.

It was a performance more about style than substance, as none of those beaten have not set the world alight since, but Calypso Choir cannot take the blame for that.

Given plenty of time to mature since, Kirk’s charge certainly deserves a crack at a race of this nature and while others have achieved more, she should not be left out of calculations, representing a trainer who knows that time of day.

Plenty of promising types look to get off the mark in the Al Basti Equiworld EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

The well-related Kazziana could well take a big leap forward from her debut effort, while Carnachy looks a winner waiting to happen after filling the runner-up spot on her first two starts, but the vote goes to John Gosden’s Persian Breeze.

The daughter of Pivotal was a solid third on her first start in what looked a good race at Nottingham, with the runner-up, Rive Gauche, going one better since and rated in the 90s.

Persian Breeze will surely have learnt plenty from that initial effort and ought to be in the thick of things under Robert Havlin.

Richard Fahey’s Ormskirk rates the best at Newcastle. The grey travelled well for a long way on his Redcar debut in the middle of last month before finding the impressive Kentuckyconnection too strong in the last of the seven furlongs.

The winner might just be above average and if Ormskirk can find even a smidgen of improvement, he has every chance of going one better in the GFA Gastech Ltd/Irish Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.
