AARON Mason took over the lead at the top of the Volkswagen Racing Cup with a win and third place finish at Brands Hatch.
The 31-year-old Doncaster driver’s third place finish in the opening race of the day was highly impressive, for the Golf GTI driver slipped to ninth place on the opening lap and had to stage a fight back to get on to the podium.
But in race two there were no errors from Mason despite a treacherously slippy track.
He assumed the lead on lap two, overhauling the Golf GTI of Richard Walker, and held on to it to the chequered flag for his second win of the season.
“My tyres were suffering towards the end and I really didn’t think I could hold on in front,” said Mason. “One lap longer, it might have been different.”
Mason (pictured below), on 262 points, leads the championship standings from Steve Wood (250), Steve Chaplin (240) and James Walker (230).
The next rounds of the Volkswagen Racing Cup are at the Dutch circuit of Zandvoort this weekend.
