Marauders men star against Dons

MOORENDS-Thorne Marauders stand off Mark Roach starred as part of a Doncaster Select side which took on the Dons in special pre season friendly last weekend.

Roach proved one of the key components in the squad of amateurs specially chosen for the Dons’ final warm-up tie.

As expected, the Dons ran out comfortable winners 38-6 but the Select XIII refused to roll over easily and provided a stern test for the professional outfit whose season begins tomorrow night with a Northern Rail Cup trip to Featherstone Rovers at 7.30pm.

Roach lined up alongside club team mates Craig Hookway, Ryan Rafferty, Wayne Rafferty, Danny Hornsby and Kev Lake as well as players chosen from Doncaster Toll Bar and Bentley Good Companions.

Lake also impressed after coming off the bench.

Dons raced into an 8-0 lead in the first 11 minutes with tries from Dean Colton and Shaun Leaf before Craig Fawcett and Chris Spurr touched down to make it 20-0 at half time.

But it was not all one sided with Moorends stand off Mark Roach and Bentley centre Paul Purnell showing up well for the Select team who grabbed a consolation try through Toll Bar full back Tom Holt in the 72nd minute with Companions’ winger Craig Whincop adding the points.

Second half tries from Mick Butterfield and Kyle Kesik (2) completed the Dons victory with Stu Sanderson kicking four goals and Kesik one.

It is hoped the match will become an annual event to strengthen the ties between the Dons and the amateur sides in the area.
