Doncaster’s men overcame a nervous start to run out 4-2 winners at Leeds Gryphons in their Northern Premier Division opener.

Skipper Tim Shelley led by example by scoring a brace against the University of Leeds outfit, with Jonathan Redfern and Alex Kerly also on target.

Leeds started the brighter of the two sides and deservedly went ahead via a deflection from Matt Gibson past stranded Doncaster goalkeeper George Ratcliffe.

A well worked move allowed Redfern to tuck in an equaliser but the hosts went in at the break 2-1 up after the goalscorer conceded a penalty corner, which was rifled home.

Player coach Richard Thomas delivered a stern half time team-talk, and his men responded with three unanswered goals.

Kerly found the net from close range to equalise, before Leeds’ indiscipline cost them dearly.

With two Gryphons players sin-binned, Doncaster took full advantage as Shelley slammed home a penalty corner and then finished off a neat passage of interplay to earn his side the points.

This weekend Doncaster face a league and cup double-header at Town Field.

Alderley Edge are the visitors on Saturday (2pm) in the Northern Premier.

Doncaster then host Conference North side Bowdon in the National Cup on Sunday (2pm).
