Askern Lions roared their way to a hard-fought Yorkshire Junior Rugby League Under-15s derby win over Bentley.

Bentley took the game to Askern in the first quarter and took a deserved lead midway through the half when centre Harry Yates broke the defensive line to score a try converted by James Smith.

Askern hit straight back and scored a length-of-the field try on the back of some strong running by their big pack.

They added a second try, as the game became more open, to lead 10-6.

Yates rewarded a spell of pressure on the Askern line when crashing through a couple of attempted tackles to score his second try to leave the score standing at 10-10.

Askern started to produce the form that has taken them to the top of the table after a keenly-contested start to the second half, and capitalised on mistakes and tiredness to run in three unanswered tries to lead 26-10.

Despite losing Lewis Allen, centre Callum Doroshuk and Sheffield Academy player Tom Davies during the game, Bentley finished strongly and prop Connor Barton broke two tackles to crash over the line.

Bentley are without a game this weekend but return to action the following week away to bottom club Lindley Swifts.

Bentley’s under-13s just missed out on their first double of the season away to Bradford-based Wibsey Juniors.

Bentley shaded an even first half but the home side looked set to gain their revenge, in an entertaining game, when taking a 16-12 lead with less than ten minutes to go.

But Bentley’s man-of-the-match Jack Werritt levelled the scores at 16-all following a barnstorming run only for the resulting conversion to sail just wide.
