LOCAL boxers Gavin McDonnell and Charlie Thompson both scored points victories on last Friday night’s Doncaster Dome boxing show.
McDonnell, the twin brother of Hatfield’s Europeaan bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell, won every round as he coasted to a comfortable 60-54 victory against Mansfield based Latvian Pavels Senkovs.
The Dunscroft man had to wait until after 10pm as he was the last fighter to enter the ring on a packed show which also featured a Cuban heavyweight, a top prospect trained by former world champion Glen McCrory and several up and coming local boxers.
It took him a while to get into his stride but he showed plenty of promise in only his second professional fight.
Gavin possesses similar skills to his brother and could also go on to challenge for titles in time.
He scored with some good body punches and looked fast and strong despite occasionally boxing out of range.
The middle stages of the contest were good rounds for McDonnell who finished well on top without having his man in serious trouble.
Thompson, from Stainforth, first started out as a professional over five years ago but quit after drawing his first fight.
But he looked fit and sharp on his return and won without too much trouble this time with a 60-55 verdict against South African born Bheki Moyo.
