Golf weekly by John Molloy: Hawley and Lowther win marathon match

THE 36-hole final of the Burnett Foursomes at Doncaster Golf Club was played on Saturday and was not resolved until the 37th hole.

Eventually Ken Hawley and Dave Lowther managed to overcome Neil Pratt and Paul Burton.

The Monday Stableford went to Ashley Fiddler with 40 points.

In second place was John Harbon (38), followed in third place by David James on 37.

Sharing fourth place with 36 points were John Langford and Alan Hessell.

The Saturday Niblicks Stableford resulted in a comfortable win for Tony Andrew with 39 points. Second was John Haig (33) with Stuart Hall (32) third.

Hall improved both his score and position in the Sunday Niblicks Stableford, winning with 34 points.

Countback was needed to resolve the minor places with George Lacey heading John West and Peter Linter, all having scored 33 points.

At Doncaster Town Moor, the Gilly Lambert Putter Medal was won by Danny Bratton on countback ahead of Ben Watson after the pair both returned 64s.

In third place with 65 came Sean Doody.

The Saturday Stableford was won by Ian Whitwell with 38 points.

Mark O’Reilly and R Greenwood both came in with 37 points but the former took second place on countback.

Thornhurst Park’s Midweek Medal was won by Roy Maskerry with 73 on countback from Stephen Saunders who also had 73.

In third place was Brian Kaye (75).

The Saturday Medal went to David Johnstone whose impressive 68 left him well clear of Neil Roberts (72) in second place with Colin Woodhouse (73) third.

The Sunday Stableford was yet another competition which had to be settled by countback when John Selby and Paul Curtiss both came in with 36 points.

Selby took first place thanks to a better back nine.

Well back in third place was Kevin Phillipson on 31 points.
