It is extremely tough to look beyond the obvious in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

Seven favourites have obliged in the last eight renewals of the final domestic Group One of the season, and Foundation looks set fair to compound the layers’ misery.

Unbeaten in three starts, the John Gosden-trained colt should be a cut above if he brings anything like his Royal Lodge-winning form to the party.

Foundation looked pretty exciting with two no-nonsense victories at Haydock, but it was his Newmarket triumph last month which really caught the imagination.

The Zoffany colt was a little keen early doors in the Royal Lodge, but the race was effectively done and dusted once he gained the lead inside the final furlong.

Deauville, who renews rivalry at Doncaster, is a nice horse, but he could not live with Foundation, whose three-quarters-of-a-length success downplayed his superiority.

Frankie Dettori’s partner has suddenly become all the rage for the Derby, but it remains to be seen whether he will cope with the step up to a mile and a half next year.

In the meantime, and with conditions quite similar at Doncaster as to what what they were like at Newmarket, his star can continue to rise by upholding Royal Lodge form with Deauville.

Dhahmaan can put Doncaster punters in cruise control by winning the Scott Dobson Memorial Doncaster Stakes.

The young son of Kodiac won two small races at Chelmsford and Nottingham before he was hurled into the fray in the Listed Rockingham Stakes at York.

Marco Botti’s juvenile produced a very honest effort, too, finishing second behind Donjuan Triumphant, with the third horse home never nearer.
