Doncaster RLFC: Wilkinson in Dons return chance

Highly-rated scrum-half Richard Wilkinson could make a welcome return to action in the Dons’ trip to Hunslet tomorrow.

Wilkinson has played just a handful of games during an injury-hit season, but is set to be included in Gary Thornton’s squad if he shows no adverse reaction to his first full week’s training for over a month

“If he does play then he probably wouldn’t be able to play a full game, but it would still be a massive boost to have a recognised scrum-half out there again to organise the side,” said the Dons’ boss, who lost Paul Mennell several weeks ago.

Thornton was hoping that loose-forward Mike Emmett, who didn’t train Tuesday and Thursday due to the cut foot which ruled him out of Monday’s defeat to Workington, would be fit enough to have a run-out last night.

“He’s probably 50-50,” said Thornton, who welcomes back Liam Welham, Sam Doherty and Russ Spiers.

Thornton admits that the players were subdued on the way back from the heavy defeat at Derwent Park, but says spirits have picked up towards the back end of the week.

“We’ve three games left and if we could win a couple of them it would act as a springboard for next season,” he said. “Hunslet are fighting to stay up but they are on fire at the moment having won their last two away games.

“But we’ve beaten them once before.

“That will give us confidence and if we can play for longer periods than we have been doing then we’ll give ourselves a chance.”
