Doncaster RLFC: ‘Mission Impossible’ task laid out

Dons are on the brink of relegation.

Even Tom Cruise would probably concede defeat when faced with the seemingly Mission Impossible task facing the Dons in their battle to retain Championship status.

After finishing 12 points adrift of third-bottom Whitehaven at the end of the regular season and having a vastly inferior points difference, boss Gary Thornton – who had targeted at least two more wins - knows that one defeat would see them relegated

With league points carried forward into the new Championship Shield competition, which sees the clubs which finished fifth to twelfth playing each other once, the Dons will certainly need to hit the road running in their opening fixture against London Broncos at The Hive on Saturday week.

The Dons produced one of their best away performances at The Hive when coming close to recording a victory there on the opening day of the season following a second half comeback.

The Dons entertain Featherstone Rovers, who just missed out on a place in the Middle 8s following several disappointing results in the closing weeks of the Championship campaign, in the first of three home games on August 16.

Rovers had to work hard to claim a 13-6 win when the two teams met at the Keepmoat Stadium earlier in the season, as did Batley who make the trip to South Yorkshire the following week.
