Doncaster races preview for Thursday

Pipers Note can be afforded one more chance to confirm the promise he showed last year when he runs in the Terry Bellas Memorial Classified Stakes at Doncaster tomorrow night.

Trained by Richard Whittaker, the four-year-old gelding signed off last season with two wins at Ripon on fast ground off marks of 78 and 86.

He began life this term off 92 so life was always going to be harder but he has only run once, in a hotly-contested handicap at Newcastle on Northumberland Plate day.

He showed up well in the early part of the race but found himself on the wrong side of the track as the race unfolded on the near side.

He blew up close home and faded into eighth, beaten just over seven lengths, but it is handy that the handicapper has dropped him 2lb.

The second of those Ripon wins has worked out extremely well as David O’Meara’s Bondesire was in third and she is now rated 97 while Line Of Reason was in fifth and he has won his last three.

But perhaps the biggest factor of all is that this will be Pipers Note’s first run over seven furlongs which could produce more improvement.

Clive Cox’s Polar Vortex should find the D C Training And Development Services Ltd Fillies’ Nursery Handicap much easier than her last assignment.

Having beaten a Richard Hannon hotpot in a Nottingham maiden she was asked to tackle the best about in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.

That task proved beyond her but Hannon’s Parsley subsequently franked the form of her maiden by finishing second in a Listed race and fourth in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes last week. She should be able to defy an initial mark of 74.

Mark Johnston’s Surewecan looked an above average juvenile when winning up at Hamilton and can follow up in the 188Bet Novice Stakes.

Beaten a head on debut at Ayr, he showed he had come on enormously for that with a clear-cut success and while this looks a decent little contest, it will be disappointing if he fails to follow up.
