Cricket: Doncaster start by the seaside

Doncaster Town will open their 2014 ECB Yorkshire Premier League season away to Scarborough.

The Bennetthorpe club, who this year enjoyed their best season for several years, will make the journey to North Marine Road on April 19.

Town’s first home game of the season is a local derby with Rotherham on April 26.

They will end the season at Town Field against Castleford on September 13.

Doncaster enjoyed their best season on record since 2008 this year, finishing fifth in the Yorkshire League and reaching T20 finals day under the leadership of young skipper Alex Gosney.

Simon Widdup, who returned to his hometown club to score 1,258 league runs and take 39 league wickets, was recently named Yorkshire League’s All Rounder of the Year at the league’s annual dinner.

The club will hold their annual general meeting on Friday, December 13 (7.30pm).

n Anyone interested in taking up umpiring can attend a course at Doncaster Town in the new year.

The Level 1 and Level 1A umpiring course will run for eight weeks from January 5 onwards.
