Angling: Barlow at the double in dominant win

Tom Barlow cruised to victory in difficult conditions in the latest Calder Anglers Open at Viking Fishery.

Barlow’s haul was almost double that of his nearest rival in the Tuesday match on Deer Pond.

Considering the conditions, the lake did not fish too badly for the 18 anglers.

And Barlow led the way from peg 13 where he took 29-8-0 of carp fishing pole and bread in just 18 inches of water.

Eric Green was second on peg 15 with 15-8-0, a mixed net of small carp, chub and skimmers, using pole and worm.

Third was Steve Mitchell who took four carp on pole and bread for 14-4-0.

Open matches are held every Saturday. For bookings call (01405) 860764 or 07813824270.

The local Polish angling club held a pike match on Selby Three Lakes between 7am and noon.

Ten pike were caught on the morning with the best weighing 24lb and another of 17lb. Deadbaits, plugs and spinners were all successful on the morning.

Due to recent cold weather, pike fishing will continue until the first week of April.

The fish were tightly shoaled for the latest Bank End Fishery Open and plenty in the 23 man field struggled.

Keith Vardy (Bank End) was next door on peg 11 and fished pole and pellet for 38-8-0 of carp to seal second place.

Sub zero temperatures ensured the first fixture of the MAP Leegem Spring League felt more like a winter match at Daiwa Hallcroft on Sunday.

But there was no discouraging the 60 anglers in action on Moat Pool, a field headed by Pete Tatley (MAP Leegem) who won from peg two on the island where he fished pole and soft pellets at 6m to catch mainly carp and the odd bream for 63-11-0.

Mick Edgecombe (MAP Leegem) was on peg 97 on the outer bank and fished pole and pellet at 11m for 48-4-0 of carp for second.
