Three days is a long time in sport.
On Sunday, Steelers conceded the Challenge Cup in a wretched display at Sheffield Arena, against Cardiff Devils.
Last night, in the same building against the same opposition, Steelers were unrecognisable, humiliating Cardiff by no less than 11-0, an astonishing margin.
Gerad Adams’ men leapfrogged over Braehead Clan to take centre stage at the top of the League. If they maintain that potency they can win the title, although you have to fancy Braehead as favourites, given their run-in.
Devils arrived on the back of a six-game winning league streak, a feat matched only by Coventry. But they were up against a different proposition from the one they mastered on Sunday,
Steelers had intensity in every shift and with Colton Fretter fitting in well back on the first line they scored two in15 minutes. Fretter took just 12 seconds to fire in the first shot, which went wide, but within three minutes Cullen Eddy smashed the puck into a d-man and then stroked the rebound low into the net.
Fretter saw his shot trapped under Ben Bowns but the goalie could not stop Mathieu Roy, gifted the freedom of Cardiff’s defensive zone, to breakaway and backhand in at 15;42.
The Welsh were more aggressive after the interval, but it didn’t do them any good. Steelers skated round them at 23;52 for Fretter to convert. At 25;33 it was 4-0 with Rob Dowd skating in from the left and rifling top-shelf.
Devils lost their shape and all sense of discipline in the last period.
Dowd rattled in No 5 off the post, Forney tapped in Fretter’s breakaway, and then Jason Hewitt stuck one away at the back post.
The visitors went all bully-boy in outlook - Tyson Marsh went for Rod Sarich and Doug Clarkson floored an unwilling combatant in Mark Thomas. After that it was another stream of goals as Roy, Forney, Jeff Legue and Dowd ran riot.
Andrew Hotham was sent off for a horrible slash on Forney.
Steelers have four remaining league fixtures: Coventry at home on Saturday, twice more against Cardiff, with a trip to Nottingham sandwiched in the middle. Anything can happen!
