Just as we thought we’d edged away from safety with the weekend win over Sheffield Wednesday, our Burnley loss was not helped by good results for Charlton, Barnsley and Birmingham.
The gap has closed slightly and that means picking up a result on Saturday against our Yorkshire rivals Leeds United is even more crucial.
We’re going into the game on the back of a successful derby day performance over Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday.
I thought against the Owls we battled well and really took the game by the scruff of the neck. Chris Brown deserved his match-winning goal and we went into the game with Burnley full of confidence on Tuesday night.
We finished strongly in the first half at Turf Moor but all the good work was undone by a dubious penalty decision against James Coppinger just seconds after the restart.
With that, Rovers’ game plan went out of the window as Burnley ran out 2-0 winners. Despite the defeat, I was still proud of the 450 fans we took to Lancashire who outsung the home faithful.
Looking ahead to this Saturday, we’re back in derby day action as we make the short trip along the M62 to Elland Road.
We could not have wished to play them at a better time with all of their off-field goings-on, however, we have not beaten them since our superb 1-0 League One play-offs victory at Wembley back in 2008.
We’ve not had the best of times against United this season with defeats in the league and Capital One Cup, but they’ve just suffered a hammering at Bournemouth on Tuesday night and I’m hoping their confidence is low for this weekend’s game against us.
Unfortunately a lot of Rovers fans are boycotting the game due to United charging £36 for entry, so to date we only have four coaches making the trip to West Yorkshire. Let’s hope our small away following will get behind the team and roar us onto victory.
Coaches for the game leave Retford at 11.45am, Harworth 11.50am, Bawtry/Rossington 12pm, Hare & Tortoise 12.05pm, Infirmary 12.15pm and the Keepmoat at 12.30pm.
There will be no bus from Sprotborugh for this fixture although fans can travel on the North Branch coach by calling 07780 316923 to book seats.
