Doncaster Rovers now have an ‘X-Factor’ when it comes to attracting their top summer targets, according to Paul Dickov.

Pop star Louis Tomlinson and John Ryan’s takeover of the club, the Scot says, will help him recruit players of a higher calibre than would normally be expected in League One.

Dickov told the Free Press this week that Rovers are busily preparing to surprise a few people in the summer transfer window as they plot another instant return to the Championship.

However, after a week that has seen Mark Duffy, Chris Brown and David Cotterill move onto pastures new, fans may have to continue to be patient for lift off under the new owners.

Dickov confirmed at last Thursday’s takeover press conference that, like last summer, he has drawn up two shopping lists.

They are based on the two different budgets presented by outgoing owners Terry Bramall and Dick Watson, thought to be around the £2million mark, and Tomlinson and Ryan, who have vowed to support Dickov with one of the best budgets in League One.

Following last week’s announcement Rovers have stated their ambition to build a squad stronger than last season’s, while Dickov says he has spoken to several players who people might be surprised see drop to League One.

However, it remains unclear whether Dickov has the green light to add to his squad before Tomlinson and Ryan’s takeover becomes official on July 18.

Dickov, meanwhile, says he is relishing the greater expectation and pressure that will come as a result of Tomlinson and Ryan’s ‘multi-million’ pound buy-out, which according to Rovers’ boss will give him more sway in the summer window.

Dickov said: “Our budget will be up there with the top five or six teams in the league.

“I’m confident that with that I can put a team together that can go straight back up again.

“I’ve already had conversations with players and agents that would surprise a few people that they’re willing to drop to League One.

“But having John and Louis on board means my selling point is a lot different because of the ambition that the club has now got.

“It’s an attraction.

“What I’m saying to players is don’t come back next year and wish you’d have been a part of it.”
