You never know these days when you’re going to fall victim to social media.
I know I get plenty of stick on there and regardless of what we do on the pitch, that’s not likely to stop.
But earlier this week my name and picture was knocking around on Twitter in a much more light-hearted way.
I was on the train, sitting across the table from a Rovers supporter. I happened to drop off, he snapped a photo and sent it out on social media.
It was funny but the guy got a bit of a shock. All my three kids are on social media so when I woke up from a having a little snooze, I knew what had gone off. I asked him what it was all about.
He didn’t quite know what to say at the time but I did tell him it was really good banter.
Social media has become a major part of football, just as it has in the rest of life.
Most players seem to be on there and there’s nothing wrong with that. They’ve just got to be careful.
Obviously, with the Football League there are rules and regulations that players have simply got to adhere to.
We’ve got our own that I brought into the club. If the players overstep the mark, they’re going to get fined for it. In the first 18 months or so there were a couple of issues but it was all sorted out very quickly.
I’ve got no problem with them being on there. It can be beneficial for the club at times.
If the players want to interact with the fans in the right way, that’s great. As long as they use it sensibly, I’m happy with it.
I know a few managers are on there, such as Nigel Adkins just down the road, but I don’t have any real desire to be a part of it.
I get enough abuse as it is without going on that.
As I said, my kids are on there, and the downside of it is if we have a defeat, after games people are trying to abuse them a little bit.
That’s wrong but it’s just the nature of keyboard warriors.
We’ve seen this week with what happened with Saido Berahino that it can cause problems. He was clearly frustrated by what happened on deadline day and reacted on Twitter. Now everyone knows there is some work to be done to repair his relationship with his club. It didn’t need to be that way.
If you are on it you’ve just got to be really careful what you write.
And make sure you don’t fall asleep on trains.
