Joe Wright has his say on a frustrating day at the office for Doncaster Rovers

Disappointed Doncaster Rovers defender Joe Wright says he and his team-mates ‘need to learn pretty quickly’ from their defeat at Shrewsbury Town, a loss which significantly dented their play-off aspirations.

The defeat at the Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium leaves Rovers six points shy of the play-off spots as the current League One campaign enters the home straight – having played a game more than sixth-placed Fleetwood Town.

And losing to a side which hadn’t registered a league victory for 64 days was not, unsurprisingly, what the doctor had ordered just a week after another away day defeat at Gillingham.

Now Darren Moore’s young squad must dust themselves down, return to the training ground and iron out the shortcomings which cost them in Shropshire ahead of welcoming high-flying Wycombe Wanderers to the Keepmoat next weekend.

Wright, himself, had an excellent game in difficult, blustery conditions for any defender and says Rovers cannot feel sorry for themselves after a disappointing day at the office.

“On the day I don't think we got going the way we can and the way we should,” he said. "I think we need to learn from that and we need to learn that pretty quickly really and start putting some positive results together.

"At the same time we still created plenty of chances, obviously Jay’s hit the post, Sheaf's had one in the first first half and I think if we'd have taken those chances it would have been a different game.

“I think once they scored they couldn't believe it really, they sat back and changed their shape pretty swiftly and went to a lot more defensive shape but I think there were still opportunities for us.

“There were a few that flashed across the goal and there were a couple of opportunities, like scrambles from set plays but unfortunately for ourselves we didn't manage to score.”

Consistency will be the key if Rovers are to gain ground on the teams above them in the table, but the defender believes there is enough quality in Moore’s young squad to chip away at the points difference between them and the top six.

“You look at the table and we'll have to put some positive results together and I think we're more than capable of that,” said Wright.

“We saw just before Christmas and just after Christmas that we are capable of going on a run so we'll be looking to do that and hopefully climb up the table.”
