James Coppinger says there is a belief in the Doncaster camp they can repeat their League One title exploits of 2013.

Rovers have been somewhat keen to downplay expectations since the collapse of John Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s takeover.

But Coppinger, who etched his name into Rovers folklore with THAT title-winning goal at Griffin Park, is setting his sights high.

“We want to win the league like everyone else in this division,” he said.

“And there’s no reason why we can’t - we’ve got some fantastic players in the squad.

“It’s a small squad yes, but we had a small squad when we won the league.

“So we know what we’re capable of and we know what has to be done. We’re fully concentrated on doing that.”

Having eventually agreed a new two-year deal, Coppinger is keen to draw a line under the summer and get down to business.

Rovers’ longest serving player is also looking forward to lending a helping hand to the club’s sizeable batch of youngsters.

“It’s part and parcel of any job really that things like that [the contract situation] happen,” said Coppinger.

“You’ve got to make the best of it.

“Everyone’s aware of the situation, it’s been eradicated, I’m back here and I’m looking forward to the season.

“This season is a massive opportunity for a lot of the lads,” he added.

“It’s about stepping up to the plate and carving out a career for yourself. I know the younger lads are looking forward to that challenge.

“It’s about progression too.

“This is the direction the club wants to go in now, and the senior pros like myself, Rob Jones, Paul Keegan and people like that will be trying to bring the young lads on.

“We’ve got some good young talent here and it’s about bringing them on and looking to the future. The young lads have got nothing to lose. They’ve got a fantastic opportunity at a fantastic club.”
