DEFENDER Sam Hird has opted to join League Two side Chesterfield following his release by Rovers.
It was expected the 24-year-old would be among the group of players offered new deals by Dean Saunders after reaching the end of their contract.
But while Saunders waits for funds to be freed up by the departures of under-contract players, it seems Doncaster-born Hird was not willing to hang around and has secured his future with a two year contract at the b2net Stadium.
Spireites boss John Sheridan said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to agree a two year deal with Sam Hird.
“He is the type of player who will bring experience and leadership qualities to the squad.”
Hird made 159 appearances for Rovers after making a loan move from Leeds United permanent in June 2007.
He was named in the starting XI when Rovers beat Leeds in the League One play off final in 2008.
