Former Doncaster Rovers loan star Bongani Khumalo is looking at “a number of options” after being released by Tottenham Hotspur.
The South African centre back is among several players with Rovers connections to be released by Premier League clubs - along with Enda Stevens, John Lundstram and Cameron Howieson.
In five seasons with Spurs, Khumalo did not make a single first team appearance and was loaned out to Preston North End, Reading, PAOK, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United.
The 28-year-old quickly became a key man at Rovers during the club’s last season in the Championship before a serious knee injury cut short his time at the Keepmoat Stadium.
There is no indication at present as to whether Paul Dickov would look to bring Khumalo back to Doncaster but the former Supersport United defender would unquestionably prove to be a very popular signing among supporters. The main stumbling block would be convincing Khumalo to take a significant drop in the wages he was on at White Hart Lane.
Khumalo’s agent Glyn Binkin has ruled out a return to South Africa’s Premier Soccer League for his client.
“We are looking at a number of options at the moment,” he said. “He won’t be back in the PSL.”
