In past columns I have been critical of consistent errors not being picked up.
I was quick to assume that Paul Dickov couldn’t see the same things as the fans.
Perhaps though he has been acutely aware of the areas in need of strengthening but had to wait until the right players become available at the right price to make a move.
If we had the budget and the desire to go out and add significant numbers to the squad we could just employ Neil Warnock.
What clubs in our position must do is act selectively but decisively.
The capture of Andy Butler, a quick solution to the loss of Sam Johnstone with a top-class replacement in Stephen Bywater and the short-term deal this week for Abdul Razak all demonstrate that we are fishing in the right pond.
If I’m right then I hope that the next foray into the transfer market will bring a forward into the club.
Whether it’s a youngster on loan from the Premier League or a significant fee-paying deal for an in-form League Two player we simply have to find the missing piece of the jigsaw.
Chances created and wasted cost us two points against Notts County and had it not been for a wonder goal from Harry Forrester would’ve done so against Barnsley too.
I’m not going to suggest that Dickov can’t see that goals or a lack thereof could be the difference between making the play-offs and settling for mid-table.
It’s obvious to anyone who has seen the Rovers this season.
We have gone the right way about building a team from the back. We’ve become hard to beat. Now we need to become a potent force in attack too.
Every club is looking for a goalscorer at this stage of the season.
It would be a real signal of intent if we were to go out and get one.
That said, I stand by my pre-season target of upper mid-table as a marker for success.
A tilt at the play-offs would be the icing on the cake.
