Doncaster Rovers: Why Gillingham clash won't be a marker in the traditional sense for Darren Moore

On Sunday Rovers head to Gillingham, the side they drew 1-1 with in the first match of the League One campaign when Moore had only been in charge for three weeks.

Though the latest meeting will come in the second round of the FA Cup, both sides are likely to put out strong teams with a potentially lucrative draw awaiting for the winner.

While it will provide the season’s first chance of an indication of how Rovers have moved on as Moore has bedded in at the club, the boss himself says he will only be concerned about seeing where his side need to improve further.

“I see signs and I see positive signs that we know who we are and what we are,” Moore said.

“The big thing for me is to get better at what we are. There is always that element of now getting better at what we are and what we do.

“That’s the real marker I’m looking for in terms of where we’re at.

“There’s always those challenges ahead and that’s what I’m looking at.”

Moore does believe that both sides will be much more settled than they were on the opening day, with both managers having chance to implement their ideas. Gillingham boss Steve Evans took charge early in the summer.

“We battled out a closely fought 1-1 draw at the start of the season, probably when both teams were still trying to find their feet,” Moore said.

“I think both teams have had a system and style of play that we’ve implement and bedded down and both those two systems lock horns on Sunday.”
