Tyson appears to be on the way out of Doncaster Rovers after recent talks with Darren Ferguson ended with a verbal agreement to activate a relegation release clause in his contract.

The 34-year-old has until the end of tomorrow to exercise that clause.

Tyson only signed a new one-year contract extension in March but lost his place in the team to loan man Gary McSheffrey - who Rovers are set to sign on a permanent deal - during the final straight of the season.

The former Nottingham Forest and Derby County frontman signed for Rovers two years ago and went on to finish top scorer with 14 goals and win two Player of the Year awards in his first season with the club.

Upon arriving at the Keepmoat Stadium, he revealed how he came close to quitting the game after a number of loan spells, injury problems and a shortage of goals.

Before signing for Rovers, Tyson briefly dropped into League Two on loan at Fleetwood Town. He also played at that level earlier in his career for Wycombe Wanderers before moving to Forest - although he may be unwilling to drop to the fourth tier at this stage in his career, particularly when he is no longer guaranteed a starting spot in the team.

Ferguson is likely to want four strikers to pick from next term, so the future of Tyson could well have a bearing on any attacking incomings in addition to McSheffrey.

He currently has Andy Williams and Liam Mandeville at his disposal, while Curtis Main and Dany N’Guessan have been placed on the transfer list.

Midfielder Richard Chaplow must exercise his relegation release clause by the end of June.
