The 21-year-old defender rejected a new contract offer from Huddersfield Town to join Rovers.

He spent seven months of last season on loan at Accrington Stanley, where he played alongside Rovers’ new goalkeeper Ross Etheridge, helping them reach the League Two play-offs.

Wright, who is 6’4”, hails from nearby Monk Fryston but qualifies for Wales through his grandparents. He made his debut for Wales U21s against Bulgaria last year.

Boss Darren Ferguson said on Rovers’ official website: “He is a Huddersfield player, but he was outstanding for Accrington last season.

“I’m really pleased he has agreed to join because he is a centre-half, a good size, can play from the back and play in a two or three at the back.

“He is one I am pleasantly surprised to get, he was offered something at Huddersfield, but he has seen what we are trying to achieve here.

“We are getting there and hoping for more obviously to build the numbers up even more.”
