He may have only just been handed the reigns at Rovers but caretaker manager Rob Jones has been no stranger to the dugout this season – thanks to former boss Paul Dickov.

In almost foreshadowing circumstances, Jones has regularly been seen regularly whispering in the ear of Paul Dickov on the touchline during games since suffering a reoccurrence of his neck problem last month

Development squad coach Jones revealed the former Rovers chief asked him to join the coaching staff on the bench during matches as an advisor.

And he spoke of his gratitude towards his ex manager for helping getting his burgeoning coaching career off the ground.

“I have great respect for Paul,” Jones said.

“I still refer to him as Gaffer, as I do all my gaffers.

“He gave me my chance with the U21s which I’m delighted with.

“He’s put me on the bench with him in the last four games in an advisory role which helped me with where I want to go.

“Football is like that. There’s friends in football, acquaintances in football and colleagues in football. That’s where it’ll always be.

“Paul’s wished me all the very best for the future.

“Hopefully we’ll continue that relationship to a point and we both move on.”

The 35-year-old revealed he has spoken to Dickov via telephone on several occasions since he was sacked on Tuesday after almost 28 months in charge.

Jones admitted Dickov’s departure has resulted in a difficult week for the club, but says it is a fact of life in football.

He said: “It’s always difficult when decisions like this are made and that goes for everybody.

“It’s not just the playing staff but the support staff, staff at the ground.

“Paul has been here for two years and he’s built up relationships with many, many people at the club.

“It’s happened for whatever reason, but we have to go on.

“There’s always another game in football.”
