Doncaster Rovers have no interest in signing striker Paddy Madden, boss Darren Ferguson has confirmed.

But the club are understood to have agreed a loan deal for Sheffield United midfielder Ben Whiteman.

Rovers have been linked with a move for forward Madden, who is currently with neighbours Scunthorpe United.

The 27-year-old scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for Iron as they reached the League One play-offs.

While signing at least one striker is firmly on Ferguson’s agenda, he insists Madden is not among his targets.

“I like him and he’s a good player but no, we’re not interested,” Ferguson told The Star.

The Rovers boss is close to securing his third signing of the summer with Blades youngster Whiteman set to join.

The Star understands that while no deal has officially been signed, the two clubs have agreed in principle for the 20-year-old to switch across South Yorkshire on a temporary deal.

United are keen for the deal to be for an initial six months with Whiteman returning to Bramall Lane in January for a brief period of assessment by boss Chris Wilder before determining where he will spend the remainder of the season.

But Rovers are understood to be confident he will be with Rovers throughout the campaign.

As part of the proposed deal. Whiteman will join up with Rovers at Cantley Park on the first day of pre-season training on June 26.

Niall Mason converted his loan move into a permanent deal immediately following the end of the season.

And Rovers have completed the signing of a left back, who is expected to be unveiled next week.
