Dean Furman says Rovers will take the disappointing defeat at Port Vale as a harsh warning how quickly the play-off push can be taken away.

Rovers were poor at Vale Park and the resulting defeat saw them slip out of League One’s top six, a spot they occupied for just four days.

As they prepare to face long time leaders Bristol City at the Keepmoat tonight, Furman says he and his team mates know that performances cannot dip too many times again if Rovers are to earn a play-off place this season.

“We need to keep our performances to a high standard because we know if they drop, as it did on Saturday, it is so tight that we’re punished,” the South Africa skipper said.

“We can slip out of the top six so easily because there is nothing between plenty of teams in this division.

“It’s up to us to maintain standards.

“I don’t think we can’t forget about it.

“It’s as important to learn from when we do badly as it is from when we do well.

“We have to take whatever we can from it and learn from it ahead of a very difficult game on Tuesday.”

Furman believes the challenge of facing table toppers City tonight is the ideal game from which to follow Saturday’s poor performance.

He said: “There’s no better game than playing the league leaders whenever it comes.

“The FA Cup game against them here last month was a big test of where we are and hopefully again we can show we’re not far off them in terms of quality.”
