Doncaster Rovers: Darren Ferguson unhappy lack of bite in defeat to Luton Town

Darren Ferguson was left ruing the fact Doncaster Rovers failed to make their early pressure count as they were beaten by Luton Town.

John Marquis and Andy Williams both missed excellent chances before James Coppinger gave Rovers the lead.

But Luton roared back to lead before the break through Cameron McGeehan and Jack Marriott before McGeehan made certain of the win for the hosts with a late penalty.

"I'm disappointed," Ferguson said. "It was a really poor result.

"Sometimes as a manager you have to be honest and come out and say we were beaten by the better team but not today.

"The game should have been over after five minutes.

"They'd gone and if we got a second it was over.

"After two minutes we should be two up. I thought we were outstanding. We should be out of sight after 30 minutes and that's what disappoints me."

An injury to Luton skipper Scott Cuthbert saw a lengthy break in play with Rovers a goal up which resulted in 11 added minutes in the first half.

And Ferguson felt the break knocked Rovers off their stride and allowed Luton to settle down.

He said: "The break on Cuthbert getting injured didn't help.

"It broke up the cycle of the game and the rhythm we had in the game. But on saying that, we can't concede goals like that.

"The first two were really awful goals.

"They got an equaliser from their first effort at goal. We lost a bit of composure."

Ferguson felt the decision from referee Andy Haines to award a penalty after Joe Wright brought down Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu was wrong.

But he criticised his defender for making a rash challenge.

"In a big game like this, the referee has got to get his decisions right," Ferguson said. "The penalty is outside the box.

"It was clear as day it was outside the box and he's given it very quickly. It's a poor decision.

"All three goals are preventable and all three are poor.

"In terms of the tackle by Joe for the penalty, it was outside the box but it was a poor tackle.Reckless.

"We were too deep for the second goal, we spoke about them being high and we knew Hylton and Marriott were a handful.

"The first goal, we just have to stop the cross."
