Who says there is no room for sentiment in football?
Because it’s fair to say Sam Johnstone feels very much loved at Doncaster Rovers - and that was key to his sensational return to the club this week.
The Manchester United goalkeeper, who made 18 appearances on loan at Rovers last season, is likely to go straight into the side at Bradford City on Saturday.
And, according to boss Paul Dickov, Doncaster is the perfect place for the highly-rated 21-year-old.
“Sam loves the club,” said Dickov.
“He loved being here last season, the fans loved him, the players loved him, the whole place did.
“It is just a good fit for him and I think that was a big factor in him coming back.
“Sam knows what he’s going to get with us.
“He improved immensely last year, he knows what I’m like as a manager and he liked how we handled him when he was here.
“If you put everything together, along with the relationship we’ve got with Manchester United, it was a perfect fit.”
Johnstone is battling it out with Jed Steer, whose loan expires after this weekend, for the gloves on Saturday.
Dickov said: “We’ve got to thank Jed Steer and Aston Villa. He’s got better and better while he’s been here.
“It gives me a bit of a headache this weekend in terms of selection but it’s a good headache to have.”
