Doncaster Belles: Consolidation comes first - Karen Walker

Doncaster Rovers Belles must consolidate their place in FAWSL1 before thinking about trophies, according to club legend Karen Walker.

Marquee signing Natasha Dowie recently said upon joining the Belles that she was intent on challenging for honours.

The capture of the Liverpool and England striker has arguably raised expectations somewhat ahead of the club’s return to the top flight.

However, Walker has urged Belles to take it one step at a time.

“Now they need to consolidate,” said Walker.

“They need to build on what they have and remain in this top league to attract even more new players and be able to compete once again.”

Walker, who scored 40 goals in 83 appearances for England, says the Belles are now ‘back where they belong’ following their controversial demotion in 2013.

“I was heartbroken when they went down,” she said.

“I’d spent 20 years at that club and to see them suffer so much really broke my heart.

“It didn’t feel right to me to not have Belles in the top flight.

“They need to be there, competing for trophies and playing against the best – that’s how I know them to be.

“Slowly but surely they’re getting back to where they should be and they’re now in the league where they belong.”
