Dickov’s derby stats make good reading

Paul Dickov’s record in derby matches as Doncaster Rovers boss is nothing short of extraordinary.

This season only Sheffield United have got the better of Rovers in eight ‘derby’ games.

Two wins for Leeds United were the only blemish last season.

In 17 ‘derby’ matches since taking the reigns at Rovers, Dickov has masterminded nine wins and five draws.

That is a great omen as Doncaster head into a derby double bill that could potentially make or break their play-off push.

Rovers, sat four points short of the top six, host Bradford City tonight hoping to hang onto the coattails of sixth spot ahead of next Tuesday’s trip to a stuttering Sheffield United.

Dickov no doubt was the sort of player who relished a feisty local derby.

And as a manger he is clearly no different. The sight of him punching the air with delight after wins at Elland Road and Hillsborough endeared him to the travelling fans on both of those occasions.

Whatever the Scot says, or does, before derby games is unlikely to be anything too far away from the norm.

But he clearly knows how to get into his players’ heads when local bragging rights are at stake.

If he can guide Rovers to at least one more derby win over the next five days, what price another local affair at Wembley next month?
