Darren Ferguson has been offered the Doncaster Rovers manager’s job, the Press Association understands.

Ferguson, the son of former Manchester United boss Sir Alex, has been out of work since leaving Peterborough United in February.

The 43-year-old Scot won back-to-back promotions with Peterborough, leading them from League Two to the Championship, in his first spell at London Road.

After being dismissed in November 2009, Ferguson spent an unsuccessful year at Preston before returning to Peterborough and guiding them back to the Championship, where they spent two seasons before being relegated in 2014.

As a player Ferguson came up through the youth ranks at Manchester United but spent the majority of his career at Wolves and Wrexham.

Interim boss Rob Jones, who was also interviewed for the vacancy earlier this week, took training today at Cantley Park ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bradford City.

It is understood that the first team squad left training today none the wiser about who will be in charge this weekend.
