CHARLTON Athletic are closing in on a deal for Doncaster Rovers defender George Friend, according to reports in the southern media.
The South London Press understands that the Addicks are willing to pay £100,000 for the versatile 24-year-old.
Friend captained Doncaster on Tuesday night when Rovers continued their pre-season preparations with a 3-2 win at Grimsby.
But Rovers are open to offers for all of their contracted players - and the six-figure sum reported could be enough to tempt boss Dean Saunders to do business.
The emergence of youngster James Husband and the dependability of Tommy Spurr means that Rovers are well stocked for left backs.
Friend has spent most of his Doncaster career at centre half - a position Saunders is desperate to strengthen.
But the former Exeter and Wolves defender will be allowed to leave if Rovers’ boss is confident of adding defensive reinforcements before the start of the new season.
Friend has also been linked with Middlesbrough, Leeds United and Crystal Palace this summer.
