Another win for Colliery

THORNE Colliery made it six wins from eight games in all competitions with a 1-0 win over Thoresby CW.

Thoresby, fifth in the table, kept Colliery at bay in the first half with some resolute defending.

Cookson, Hindson, and Rhodes all went close for Thorne but could not find a way through the visitors’ defence.

All three had a hand in Colliery’s first attempt on goal as the trio worked the ball from left to right, for Rhodes to cross to Mason.

Mason rose the highest to loop his header back over the keeper but it went inches wide of the post.

Colliery’s defence were made to work hard at the other end, but Howe, Hinchliffe, Sneap, and Glenn Rafferty held firm to keep Thoresby out.

Both teams were defending resiliently so it was going to take a special goal to break the deadlock - and on the half hour it came Colliery’s way.

On the edge of Thoresby’s penalty area, Colliery worked the ball to the right for Hindson.

Thoresby’s keeper was expecting a cross, but Hindson had other ideas and lobbed the keeper to give the home side the lead a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half saw both teams trying to get the upper hand.

But good defending from both teams meant there was no change to the scoreline.

Colliery’s midfield played the ball through to Fell, who rounded the keeper, and a last ditch block stopped Fell scoring into an empty net and doubling Colliery’s lead.

At the other end Thoresby had a penalty claim waved away.

Marshall, on for Howe, slid in to block the ball, and with Marshall on the ground Thoresby’s attacker played the rebound against Marshall’s arm.

The referee refused to award a penalty and Colliery saw the game out to claim another three points.
