All the pressure is on Leeds United tonight.
So says Rovers boss Paul Dickov ahead of this evening’s Sky-televised Capital One Cup first round tie.
“It’s a great game for us because all the pressure is on Leeds really,” said Dickov.
“Everyone tuning in will expect the Championship team to win but we can take a lot of heart from knowing what we did against Championship teams last season.
“Looking at the results [from Tuesday night] seven Championship teams have gone out already. We’re very capable of progressing.”
Asked about his approach to cup competitions, Dickov added: “We want to win every game we can.
“Last year we had a couple fantastic performances in this competition, at Watford, and then Fulham where we lost the game but we should’ve won.
“Our approach is that it’s the start of the season and we want to get as many wins as we can to boost confidence within the group.”
This week has seen several clubs field weakened sides but Dickov is likely to keep changes to a minimum. Nathan Tyson and Harry Middleton are pushing for starts.
Of the Capital One Cup, Dickov said: “I think it’s a fantastic competition. What it does for lower league clubs is it let’s you hang onto the dream. Look at what Bradford City did.
“Cup runs are important to clubs for lots of reasons, there’s the financial aspects of it and the confidence it can build.
“This early in the season it’s important to get some momentum and match time into the lads. These next six to eight weeks are really important in laying the foundations for the season.”
