VIDEO: Players battle it out in Doncaster charity soccer contest

More than 400 players battled it out for a slice of glory at a charity football tournament to mark the opening of a new Doncaster five-a-side complex.

Fifty two teams took part in the contest at Goals Soccer Centre, the new £3 million football venue on Worcester Avenue at Wheatley.

And Stainforth FC eventually emerged victorious, beating TMT 2-1 in the final.

The week-long contest raised £1248 in total for the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary while the victorious team secured themselves a year’s free football at Goals.

The centre, which is sitauted just off Wheatley Hall Road, has been built on the former Crompton Lighting factory and includes ten rubber-based, floodlit pitches, each named after world famous stadiums such as Wembley and the Stade de France.

Each pitch is self-contained - but two pitches have an added attraction - cameras which cam capture the action on the pitch so classic goals, moments of skill and controversial moments can all be replayed and saved for posterity.

The centre also includes a bar area - which will be used to host children’s parties - and changing facilities and is the 46th complex in the Goals chain with branches across the UK as well as in Los Angeles.

The centre is open from 10am to 11pm seven days a week.
