A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a flat blaze in the early hours of this morning.
Firefighters and police were called at around 2am this morning to a fire, which had started in a ground floor flat on Wentworth View, Wombwell.
Crews from Dearne, Tankersley and Cudworth worked together to extingush the fire and left around 4.30am.
A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed that nobody had been fatally injured, but the cause of the fire is not yet known.
A joint investigation with South Yorkshire Police was due to start at 10am this morning.
A police spokesman said: “A 41-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following an incident at an address on Wentworth View, Wombwell.
“Police were called at around 1.50am this morning to reports of a disturbance in the street and a fire at a nearby flat. Smoke was seen coming from the flat and a fire alarm was going off. A small number of residents were evacuated while the fire was brought under control.
“The ambuance attended, but the occupant of the flat was not taken to hospital. No one was injured. An investigation is underway.”
