Residents are being urged to support a fundraising campaign to open a foodbank in Mexborough which could help scores of families struggling on the breadline.
The project is one of four community causes which are in line for a grant of up to £3000 through the Lloyds Bank Community Fund. Mexborough-based Food AWARE, which is behind the foodbank project, would use the money to set up base and hand out up to 50 food parcels weekly.
Managing director Sean Gibbons, 40, of Mexborough, said: “Hundreds of families could benefit from this in the town. We will ask the Job Centre to refer people to us who need help.”
Mexborough-born actress and friend Sally Carman, currently starring in Kes at Doncaster’s Cast theatre, is also supporting the cause and said: “For people and their families to be going hungry like this in this day and age is totally unacceptable.”
The foodbank is nominated alongside Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Start-A-Heart 24/7 and the Whiteknights Emergency Voluntary Service. Each cause will get between £500, £1000, £2000 and £3000, depending on votes. Mr Gibbons said those who use the foodbank will be asked to make a donation of around £2.50 in return for a box of produce. He hopes to open the foodbank before Christmas after they find a venue.
