Why YouTube is helping young riders in Doncaster to Mech’ It Better

Throughout March, Road Safety GB has been running an on-line programme of presentations aimed at reducing collisions and casualties among this road user group.

Today, Young Rider and Driver Officer John Furniss will feature at the event with a presentation about the partnership’s work with YouTube Vloggers Mech’ It Better.

A spokesman for Road Safety GB said: “PTW riders are at a significantly higher risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road injury collision than other road users.

“Our online event comprises of a mix of presentations, discussion sessions and podcasts featuring experts from academia, road safety and the PTW sector – outlining the measures they think we should be taking to help reduce collisions and

casualties among PTW riders.”

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership runs a series of initiatives aimed at PTW riders including the recent launch of the Mech’ It Better series that places the focus on bike maintenance.

SYSRP presenter John Furniss said: “With Covid putting a stop to many of the usual ‘engagement’ routes with young riders, we decided to embrace modern technology and venture into the world of YouTube.

“For the last ten months, we have been working with local Vloggers, Mech’ It Better, to produce a series of short basic maintenance videos specifically aimed at new young riders.

“Our presentation discusses the ‘ups and downs’ of the ongoing project, while showing the love for 125s.”
