Stagecoach customers in South Yorkshire are getting the best value bus fares in the country, according to new independent research.

Consumer watchdog Passenger Focus has found that 75 per cent of customers in South Yorkshire are either very or fairly satisfied with the value for money offered by Stagecoach - the highest figures of all the bus companies surveyed in the country. This figure has increased from 67 per cent in the same period the previous year.

It also found that bus passengers using Stagecoach in South Yorkshire are consistently more satisfied than customers of other operators in a number of additional key measures.

These include punctuality and time waiting for the bus, which has increased from 71 to 80 per cent, cleanliness and condition of the outside of the bus, up to 82 per cent, and ease of getting on and off the bus, now 94 per cent.

The cleanliness and condition of the inside of the bus received a score of 83 per cent, availability of seats or space to stand was up five per cent to 91 per cent and personal security on the bus had risen to 84 per cent.

Stagecoach bus drivers in the region also outperformed those of other operators in most key measures.

These include safety of driving, up from 85 to 92 per cent, driver appearance, now 92 per cent and the time a driver gives customers to reach their seat, which had increased to 83 per cent.

In the survey, Stagecoach came out on top with the highest operator overall journey satisfaction score nationally, which has increased to 90 per cent.

Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “This latest independent research proves that our customers are the most satisfied with the value for money that we offer out of any bus operator in the country, which is extremely pleasing.

“It shows that we are again leading the way on what matters most to bus passengers – value for money, punctuality, waiting times and the on-board experience.

“This recognition is a tribute to the customer focus of our drivers and our wider support team behind the scenes. They can be rightly proud of what they have achieved.

“But the hard work doesn’t stop here. We will continue to invest in our services, staff training and other measures to improve the travel experience for our customers.”

Passenger Focus surveyed around 34,000 passengers across 19 areas outside of London.

Passenger Focus Chairman Colin Foxall, in his foreword to the latest report, said: “Stagecoach had the highest combined scores and showed very good year on year consistency across its operations.”
