Relatives have spoken of their loss and devastation following the death of a young father who was struck by a train.

Richard Straw’s three-year-old daughter Scarlett, who was with him when the East Coast service ploughed into them on the line between Bentley and Adwick, remains in a critical condition in Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Mr Straw’s parents issued a statement through British Transport Police following the tragedy on the afternoon of Monday, July 11.

They said: “We are devastated by the loss of our son Richard and remain gravely concerned for the welfare of our granddaughter, who is still in a critical condition in hospital.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their help and support. This is a very difficult, sad and distressing time for us all. Richard was very much loved by his family and friends.”

Mr Straw, 28, lived in Bentley. An inquest will be held into his death. Police inquiries are continuing into the incident.
