The friends and family of Ella Smith, who sustained fatal injuries in a car accident last week, are trying to raise thousands in a bid to give her the funeral ‘she deserves’.

Ella was making the 30 yard journey from a corner shop to her grandma’s house when she collided with a car.

The 11-year-old, of Wellington Grove, Bentley, was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary but died later that night from head injuries.

And now, family friend, Simon Austerfield is hoping to raise £10,000 through a fundraising page to help Ella’s parents, Vicky and Dave Smith pay for a funeral and a ‘lasting memorial’ to the popular Bentley Kirkby Avenue primary school pupil.

Simon, a HGV driver who works with Dave at the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation, said: “What’s happened to Ella is their worst nightmare.

The 40-year-old continued: “Dave said he won’t be able to walk her down the aisle or watch her go to prom, so he wants to make sure he can go all out for her funeral and give her the kind of send off she would want.”

“The family were having a difficult year before this even happened, Dave had been very ill and was off work for months and had only been back at work for two weeks when this happened.

“I wanted to do something, to make what they’re going through a little bit easier at this difficult time so I thought I would set up the Just Giving page.

“I only set it up on Tuesday morning, but I have been flabbergasted by the response so far!

“But we still have more to raise, so if anyone can donate even just a £1 it all helps towards giving Ella the best send off possible.”

A total of £1,661 has been raised so far, but supporters are still hoping to raise over £8,700 over the next month in order to hit their target.

Ella, is believed to have been returning to her grandma’s house in Broughton Avenue, Bentley, from buying sweets at McColl’s store when collided with a Citroen C3 at the junction with Watch House Lane.

The driver of the car was not injured and nobody has been arrested in connection with the collision, a police spokesman said.

Score of tributes have been paid to Ella since the accident on February 19, in a Facebook memorial group set up by her classmates entitled ‘R.I.P ELLA BELLA SMITH’

Ella’s mum, Vicky Smith, is among those who have paid tribute to the tragic youngster on the group.

She said: “Me and Dave have been reading all your kind words and we can’t believe all the love and support you have shown our beautiful baby girl thank you xx love you baby girl love mummy and daddy xxx.”

An inquest into Ella’s death was opened at Doncaster Coroners Court on Tuesday, and has been adjourned until later this year.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 646 of February 19, 2015.
