Thousands expected at Isle Rescue Day

Rescue Day has grown to become the largest event of its kind in the world.

The events primary purpose is to drive home the importance of water, road, fire and rail safety as well as other public safety messages.

Visitors will see numerous agencies in action demonstrating rescues and showcasing the work they do to help keep people safe.

The event will be opened jointly by the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, the chairman of Humberside Fire Authority, the chief fire officer and deputy chief fire officer of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, the acting chief ambulance officer of East Midlands, Humberside’s chief officer for the Special Constabulary and the deputy chief constable of Humberside Police alongside other dignitaries.

An exciting day for the whole family is planned with an action packed schedule of dynamic displays. The public will see simulated road accidents involving a road tanker in the main lake, bus collisions with cars and motorcycles. There will be numerous water rescue displays involving all of the blue light emergency services as well as the many support agencies. The Newfoundland rescue dogs – owned and trained by Pete Lewin will also be involved in simulated rescues. This year there will be a simulated house fire and ‘Smokey Joes’ fire education unit – these displays will warn adults and children of the dangers of fire whilst helping to educate them in regard to fire safety in the home. The Fire Investigation dogs from K9 F.I. will be in action as will the Police dogs and their handlers.

The Battle of Britain Memorial flight Spitfire is scheduled to perform a spectacular flypast display at the event and the Red Devils parachute team will perform their ’water drop’ straight into the main lake – a number of power boats from rescue agencies will then recover each of the sky divers.

Rescue Day this year will showcase to the public a full size rail/road crossing incident simulation. Working jointly with Network Rail, Volker Rail, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service – 200 tonnes of ballast, 100 rail sleepers, and 150m of rail-track has been installed at the Rescue Day site. A train has been delivered by Heanor Haulage and a road/rail level crossing has been installed by teams from Network Rail – these teams have also installed a foot crossing to educate the public at large in rail crossing safety. The simulated major incident will involve a bus in collision with a train at a road/rail crossing.

The Humberside Police helicopter is scheduled to attend; this and the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance will land. The Bristows Sikorsky S-92 search & rescue will display and flypast for the attending public.

The International Rescue Corp, The Police Marine unit, EMAS & the Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) and the regions Fire Services amongst many others will be displaying their capabilities this year. American show trucks and large recovery vehicles will also be on display plus many vintage emergency vehicles.

The ‘Motorway Cops’ and The ‘Traffic Cops’ (as seen in the popular BBC TV series’) from North Yorkshire, The Central Motorway Police Group, South Yorkshire and Humberside Police forces will be at the event and will perform a live pursuit demonstrating how the team bring such incidents to a safe conclusion.

The event has free parking and entry cost is £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s and OAPs, and a family ticket is just £20 - including a free souvenir programme. Gates open at 9am and the opening ceremony is at 10am - displays start at 10.30am.

Rescue Day merchandise and souvenirs will be on sale and all proceeds from the event and the merchandise are donated to emergency service charities and local charitable causes.

The event promises to be even bigger and better than in previous years making it an exciting and unrivalled day out for visitors. It is always a popular event and attracts numbers in the region of 25,000 - this year’s action packed schedule has something for all.
